Fields of Fire
oil and cold wax on deep edged canvas. 75×50cm
Along the cliffs of West Pentire, the headland wakes in fields of fire. A sea of red on emereld step, where wild untamed scarlet sleeps….
From late May through June, the clifftop above Porth Joke (Polly Joke) is filled with a vibrant blanket of red and gold as the poppies spring to bloom alongside the corn gold marigolds and grasses.
The particularly hot weather over this summer meant the display was earlier than usual and by the time I got around to taking my sketchbook there was mostly long grass and only a splattering of crimson. But this is why artistic license was invented. I will be sure to time it better next year.
